Starr, Mine Chief, Dies. George W. Starr, 77, former superintendent of the Empire mine at Grass Valley and first president of the Gold Mining Association of America, died last night in his apartment in San Francisco after a cerebral hemorrhage suffered a week ago. Staff, a widely-known mining man, became associated with the fabulous gold- producing mine, the Empire, in 1887, through his cousin, William B. Bourn, owner of the mine. After six years in Grass Valley, Starr accompanied John Hays Hammond to South Africa on a mining venture, returning to Caliornia in 1898, when he became superintendent of the Empire mine, a post he held until his retirement in 1934. Starr was elected first president of the Gold Mining Association of America at its inaugural meeting in San Francisco in 1933. Surviving are a widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Crocker Starr, and a daughter, Mrs. Frank Nilon [nee Dorothy Staff] of Palm Springs. Funeral arrangements are not yet made."
