Former Merchant Dies in San Jose

Hermann Westerfeld, Who Was in Business Here Many Years, Passes Away

Special Dispatch to the "Chronicle"

SAN JOSE, March 27 -- Hermann Westerfeld, for many years a resident of San 
Francisco, where he had engaged in business for more than thirty years, died 
at his home in South Fourteenth street, in this city, today after a brief 
illness.

He was a member of the firm of Schroth & Westerfeld of San Francisco, which 
manufactured compressed yeast.  A year ago, he retired from business and came 
to this city to make his home.  He was a native of Germany.  69 years old.

He was married a short time ago to Mary Murphy, who, with four children by a 
former marriage, survives him.  The children are William Westerfeld, Mrs. A. 
H. Lochbaum, Mrs. George Trefontaine and Mrs. Frank Henry.  The funeral will 
be held tomorrow, and interment will be in Cypress Lawn Cemetery, San 
Francisco.


Additional Comments:

Herman was born January 1841 in Hanover, Lower Saxony, Germany.  He migrated 
to the United States in 1858 and settled in the Saint Louis, Missouri area.  
Herman married his 1st wife, Leopoldine Lang, on November 12, 1866 in Saint 
Louis Co., Missouri.  She was the mother of all of the children:

Emma L. Westerfeld, m. August H. Lochbaum, Jr.
William Herman Westerfeld
Lillian Westerfeld, m. George Trefontaine
Olga Westerfeld, m. Frank Henry
Herman B. Westerfeld

Leopoldine died January 14, 1910.   He then married Mary J. Murphy in May 1910.
