When about forty feet east of Potrero avenue a sudden jar was experienced. The engine was stopped, and lying upon the west rail was found the dead body of a man, whose right arm had been cut off, his right leg crushed and his body about the loins and abdomen terribly mangled. About forty yards farther off from the place where the jar was felt were found a set of false teeth, a piece of carpet, which the deceased had evidently used as a cape to shield himself from the rain, a knife and pipe and other trifles. The supposition is that he was struck at this spot and being caught in the guard rail was dragged the remainder of the distance. Officer Thomas Stanton and Yardmaster Gill notified the police of the accident, and the remains were conveyed to the Morgue, where they now lie unidentified. The deceased had no teeth, and the false set undoubtedly were his. In his pockets were a number of the business cards of one Conrad Hildenbrand, a plumber on Sixteenth street. The deceased was about 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches in height, and had the right thumb amputated at the first joint. When found the remains were attired in a black diagonal sack-coat and vest of the same material, dark pantaloons and overalls of gray stuff, rubber leggings and heavy boots. He is believed to have been a German, but it is positively known that he is not Hildenbrand.
