East Union Cemetery, Manteca, San Joaquin County, California Submitted 2 April 2004 Catalogued by Boy Scout Troop 438 as Eagle Project for Travis Haroldsen Dec 31, 2003 The intent of this project was to catalogue the information from the tombstones in the East Union Cemetery as a reference for family history or other research. Volunteers canvassed the cemetery and recorded the inscription from each grave marker. This information was then compiled into a single table. To minimize the mistakes and to provide as much information as possible, we compared our transcription with four other references: · Sextant records in the possession of the caretaker. These consisted of burial records from the early 1960’s to the 2003 and a computer printout of unknown source containing most of the earlier records. · An earlier transcription of the cemetery completed by the San Joaquin Genealogical Society. It is located in the Manteca City Library titled: Old Cemeteries of San Joaquin County, California, Vol 1, printed 1960. · California Death Index found at ancestry.com, which contains a reasonably complete list of deaths in California from about 1940 to 1997. · Social Security Death Index at ancestry.com which contains social security claims through September 2003. If information in these records disagreed with our transcription or if the name did not appear in any of these references, we double-checked the tombstones. If we could not reconcile the discrepancy, we recorded both sets of information. We also recorded additional information from these references that was not found on the tombstones. Where two dates are listed for a birth or death, the first is the one listed on the tombstone, the second is from one of the other references.. The first field is either the row in the newer part of the cemetery or the family plot in the older part. The second column is the location within the row or plot. Next is the name, written last name first. The fourth field is the burial location as recorded in the sextant records. The listing of the sextant record location is not complete because we were part way through the burial records before we began recording the information. The next two fields in the table give birth and death information. They are separated by a tab, whereas multiple dates within one field are separated by spaces only. The inscription from the stone is listed next. The last field contains notes concerning the tombstone, additional information from other records, or the source of information for people for whom there were no tombstones. There were numerous names in the sextant record for which there were no tombstones. Where the row or plot is known, they are listed in the approximate location with a U in the second column. If there was no information about location, they are listed at the end of the table. ********************************************************************** These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by other organizations.
