She was 77. Ms. Atkins, a former teacher, headed the San Joaquin County Ombudsman Program for several years. Before assuming that post, she served as manager of the Weberstown Mall for 10 years. Born Marilyn Maxine Eckerman on July 17, 1927 in Hollywood, California, she attended Covina Union High School. She graduated from the University of Santa Barbara in 1950 and began her first career as a teacher at Selby Lane Elementary School in Atherton. In 1955 she and her family moved to Ventura County where Maxine reared her daughter, Karen. In 1960 she began a 22 year career as general manager, marketing director and property manager in the shopping center industry. In 1985 she received the Susan B. Anthony Award for Outstanding Women in Business from the San Joaquin County Commission on the Status of Women. In 1984-85, she served as foreman of the San Joaquin County Grand Jury, she was a member of Women Executives of Stockton, past president of Sunflower Presents, an organization providing entertainment for those in nursing care facilities. Active for years in the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce, she served on the board of directors and the executive committee. She also served on the board of directors of the Convention and Visitors Bureau. In addition, she was a founding member of the Older Women's League and a member of P.E.O. Chapter NH of Stockton. Ms. Atkins loved her family, her many, many friends, her home, her cats and her garden, dressmaking and sewing and a variety of crafts. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Kraft of Connecticut; her son-in-law, Dennis Kraft, her sister, Jeanne Larkin of Portola Valley and two grandchildren, Kelley and Robert Kraft. A celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 1, 2005 at the Stockton Yacht Club, 3235 River Drive, Stockton. The family suggests memorial donations be made to The American Heart Association, Hospice of San Joaquin County, Sunflower Presents, or the California P.E.O.
