Mrs. Bailey was born to proud Portuguese immigrants in Hanford. At an early age, she helped her parents milk cows in various dairies. She graduated from Hanford High School and later moved to Livermore in 1952, where she lived for 54 years, working for Bank of America and Wells Fargo. She married John R. Bailey, and together they owned and operated the Callaghan Mortuary and Livermore Crematory for 37 years, which will continue to be operated by the family. They also owned Gardella Liquors and the Rodeo Club for 30 years. Mrs. Bailey was very active. In her early years she belonged to the 20/30 Club and the Venture Girls of Livermore. She was a parishioner at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, and a quarter horse breeder who had many prize-winning mares and foals. She was a member of the Livermore Stockman’s Rodeo Association and the Livermore Chamber of Commerce. She was also a member of the I.D.E.S., S.P.R.S.I. and U.P.P.E.C., which are all Portuguese associations. She and her husband were members of the California Funeral Directors Association and were elected to the International Order of the Golden Rule about 43 years ago. A voracious reader, she was also very active in recreational activities. In the 1970s she was a second baseman for the L.L.N.L. softball team. She was an excellent bowler and a master at darts. She and her husband enjoyed deep-sea fishing for rock cod. Mrs. Bailey is survived by her children, Debra Anne Bailey-Plato, and her husband, Hap, of Tracy, Carol Anne Bailey, and John Michael Bailey, and his wife, Gwyn, all of Livermore; sisters, Alice Pikula, and her husband, Bernard, of Pleasanton, and Margie Ramsey, and her husband, George, of Visalia; grandchildren, Lukas and Marcus Plato, Jared Bailey Moynahan and Garrett, Brooks and Johnny Bailey; and numerous nieces, nephews and godchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Bailey. Friday’s Mass will begin at 11 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 458 Maple St., in Livermore, with the Revs. Stanislaus Poon, David Rezendes, Bill Arvher and Bill Nebo, and Monsignor Robert Adams to officiate. Visitation will be observed from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday with a Vigil at 7 p.m., both at Callaghan Mortuary, 3833 East Ave. Interment will be in the family plot at St. Michaels Catholic Cemetery.
