Bates Oct. 31, 1921 — March 10, 2006 Memorial services will be Friday for Dorless V. Bates, 84, who died March 10, 2006 at Sutter Tracy Community Hospital. Born in New Mexico, Mrs. Bates moved to Tracy from Calipatria in the 1940s. She was homemaker who also worked for Tracy Unified Schools District as a bus driver for Gladys Poet School 11 years. She also did seasonal work at H.J. Heinz Co. A very active volunteer, she devoted 22 years to Tracy Rural Fireman’s Auxiliary, Lolly Hansen Senior Center 19 years, and various church auxiliaries. She also drove friends to Stanford University Hospital for cancer treatments. Mrs. Bates was a caring wife who provided full-time care for her husband for 13 years before his death in 1987. She enjoyed sewing and donated many quilts to the homeless. She was known for her strong Christian faith. Mrs. Bates is survived by her children, Daniel L. Bates, and his wife, Linda, of Tracy, Margaret Gassman, and her husband, Russ, of Livermore, and Linda Cayot, and her husband, Jan, of Paradise; siblings, Ethel Landers and Thelma Sharpe, both of Missouri, Ted and Corky Hall, both of Calipatria, Betty Underwood of Arizona, and Billy Hall of El Centro; grandchildren, William Woodard of Inyokern, Lori Wood and Danae Wright, both of Paradise, Michelle Reis of Riverside, Traci Whittemore and Michael Bates, both of Tracy, and Robert Bates of Stockton; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Lafayette Bates; brothers, Carl, Raymond and George Hall; sister, Juanita Lamb; grandson, Walter Woodard; and special friend, Sidney Stamps. Friday’s services will begin at noon at Tracy Southern Baptist Church, 489 W. Mt. Diablo Ave. Visitation will be observed from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Hotchkiss Mortuary, 5 W. Highland Ave. Interment will be private. Contributions in Mrs. Bates’ name may be sent to Spina Bifida Association of the Greater Bay Area, 100 W. South St., Tracy 94376.
