He was born August 3, 1926 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Gus married Billie Catherine "Kate" Sewell on April 13, 1945 shortly before he was shipped off to the Asiatic Pacific in World War II. He served in the U.S. Army, 11th Airborne Division as a Paratrooper and was stationed in the Philippines. Gus was training to invade Japan when the Japanese surrendered and then served in occupied Japan for 18 months. Gus spent many years in farm and ranch management in Imperial Valley California. He also was skilled as a heavy duty diesel mechanic. Gus served over 30 years as a Southern Baptist Minister and church planter throughout the Northwest and California. He was a "country" preacher who presented the Gospel in simple terms. He also was a master gardener whose vegetable gardens were very productive and enjoyed by many. For two years he volunteered with the S.T.A.R.S. (Sheriff's Team of Active Retired Seniors) with the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Department. He also volunteered as a van driver transporting veterans to and from the Livermore Veteran's Hospital. Gus is survived by his wife, Kate. They were married exactly one month short of 60 years. Other survivors include his five daughters, Janis Jeffries of Seattle, Washington, Ann Crittendon of Brawley, California, Patty Henderson of Oceanside, California, Jean Nutter of Puyallup, Washington and Mary Van Winkle of Stockton; sons-in-law, Rick Jeffries, Shelvie Crittendon, Jim Henderson, and Cary Nutter; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Surviving siblings include C.E. "Tiny" Bohot, Rosalie Petty and Betty Petty all of Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his son, Mark. Viewing will take place at DeYoung Shoreline Chapel, 7676 Shoreline Drive, Stockton from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 17, at 10:00 a.m. at Quail Lakes Baptist Church, 1904 Quail Lakes Drive, Stockton, 951-7380.
