Born in Sierra Madre, Mr. Carter lived in Mokelumne Hill 13 years. He graduated from Sanger High School in 1955 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1959. He then went to watch-making school in San Jose. He owned and operated Carters Jewelers in Tracy and later worked for Donald Ball Jewelers in San Andreas and Firefall Jewelers in Angels Camp. Mr. Carter also owned, built and drove TT sprint cars at racetracks in San Jose, Fremont and Pikes Peak. He was even part of the cast in the movie “Dirt” with one of his cars. Mr. Carter is survived by his sons, Robert Lee Carter of San Andreas and Lewey Carter of Fresno; daughters, Dianna Leigh Stapp of Fresno and Kelli Frye of West Point; and nine grandchildren. Sunday’s memorial services will begin at noon at the Carter home, 1015 Prussian Hill Road, in Mokelumne Hill. Interment will be private. San Andreas Memorial Chapel, P.O.
