Born on Ninth Street, in Tracy, Mr. Cash was a member of the league championship football team during his senior year at Tracy High School and also pitched for the Bulldogs’ baseball team. He graduated from Tracy High in 1936. He played semiprofessional baseball in the Pacific Coast League for three years and landed a contract with the Reds farm team. In 1939, he married the love of his life, Maudie Wood. In 1941, he worked for Southern Pacific Railroad Co. in Tracy as a switchman and then spent two years as a trainmaster. He also served as president of the Tracy Lodge 849, Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. He retired in 1979 after 38 years of service. He was a member of the Tracy Elks Lodge, West Side Pioneers, the Good Valley Sam’s Club, and a director of the Golden Anchor Boat Club. He was a member of Tracy Senior Citizens Inc. and was actively involved in fundraising for, and the building of, the Lolly Hansen Senior Center. He enjoyed traveling, and he visited every state except Ohio. He liked fishing and watching the Oakland A’s. He especially enjoyed the Lake Shasta area, where he taught his nieces to water-ski. Mr. Cash is survived by his wife of 66 years, Maudie Cash of Roseville; nieces, Beverly, Susan and Janet Barentson; and many great-nieces and great- nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Norris; and his brother, Russell Cash. Published on Saturday, January 28, 2006, in the Tracy Press.
