He died in Lodi, CA on Thursday, November 1, 2005. He was the first born son of Jacob S. Caufield and Cleo (Hurst) Caufield, both of pioneering families who came West in the mid 1800's. Shortly after Jim's birth, his parents moved to Sacramento where his younger brother Maxy Caufield was born. After his mother's untimely death, his father was later remarried to Nellie Pruitt and resettled in Lodi in 1928 as a principal in what was to become Super Mold Corporation. He gained seven Pruitt stepsisters and brothers by his father's marriage. Jim attended Lodi High School and graduated after taking off near the end of his senior year to work as a second mate on a re-outfitted sailing schooner delivering freight in the south pacific. His stories regarding his life adventures were legendary among his family and friends. He loved lively debates, often taking both sides of an issue just to keep the discussion going. He was a member of the high school debating team and his yearbook noted "though vanquished he argueth still". After high school and in the midst of the "Great Depression" he found employment at Foster & Woods Cannery in Lodi, shortly becoming a foreman and later a night shift superintendent. He continued his career in the food industry by joining Don Woods in his new business venture at Woods Canning in Stockton as plant engineer and a principal in the company. He continued at that facility after it was sold to Del Monte Corporation becoming plant manager and retired in 1974. Jim made many friends in the canning industry and his pioneering expertise in tomato paste equipment and processing was well respected throughout the industry. Jim was an avid camper and fisherman with a penchant for "big" fish stories. He was a past governor and honored member of the Lodi Moose, past president and member of the Lodi Trailer Club, thirty-second degree Mason-Lodi Masonic Lodge, and member of the Stockton Ben Ali Shrine. Jim was widely known, a friend and loved one to many--he will be sorely missed. At Foster & Woods in Lodi he met his soon to be wife, Anna Maria Rieger. Ann's parents were George and Magdalena (Hieb) Rieger, whose family settled in Lodi about 1900 from North Dakota. Ann was one of twelve children. Jim enjoyed a close relationship with Ann's family and many hours were spent at lively gatherings, at Jim and Ann's house. He and Ann were married over 60 years and are survived by their sons and their spouses, Jack L. Caufield and wife, Diane of Bakersfield, James N. Caufield and wife, Joann of Kailua-Kona Hawaii; grandchildren, Jeff Caufield, Julie Chaves, Brenda Miller, and Kristin (Mayer) Caufield; seven great-grandchildren, Michael and Robert Miller, Elizabeth, Sarah and Claire Chaves, Zander and Zane Caufield; stepsister, Margie Gienger;and special family friend Linda (Mahnke) Conard. Memoriam may be made to charities of choice. Friends are invited to attend a Funeral Service on Sunday, November 6, 2005 in the Chapel of Flowers of Cherokee Memorial Park, Hwy 99 & Harney Lane, Lodi, CA at 1:30 p.m. Internment will follow. No visitation will be held. Gierhart-Wells & Donahue Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
