He died Wednesday morning at Sutter Tracy Community Hospital from health problems that plagued him for years. A native of Harrisburg, Ill., Mr. Clark enlisted in the U.S. Navy in Detroit, Mich., at age 17 as an aviation machinist mate and served in World War II, the Korean War, the Cuban missile crisis and the Vietnam War before retiring as a chief petty officer in 1966 after 22 years of service. He worked at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago before moving to Tracy in 1968. In Tracy, he worked two years at Tracy Motors for his father-in-law, Wes Shekels, and then was an automotive technician for the California Highway Patrol in Tracy for 20 years before retiring in 1991. Mr. Clark was active in the Tracy community. He served as exalted ruler of the Tracy Elks Lodge in 1983-84 and 2½ terms as commander of James McDermott Post, American Legion. He was also a member of Tracy Post 1537, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Tracy Breakfast Lions Club. Mr. Clark loved to get together with “old cronies” for coffee and conversation. He was a strong supporter of American armed forces and was especially proud of his grandniece, Army Sgt. Desiree Condon, who served in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Mr. Clark is survived by his sons, Jack Clark Jr. and his wife, Pam, of Olympia, Wash., and John Clark and his wife, Peggy, of Oxford, Miss.; sister, Gayle Copple and her husband, Warren, of Detroit, Mich.; niece, Mary Condon and her husband, John, of Tracy; nephews Bill Souza of Sacramento and Frank Souza of Honolulu; grandnieces, Malissa Sherwood of Rocklin and Sgt. Desiree Condon of Wiesbaden, Germany; brothers-in-law Senior Chief Shawn Shekels and his wife, Dawn, and Steve Shekels, all of Friendship, Wis.; and sister-in-law Sandy Shekels of Wausau, Wis. He was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Darlene Clark, and his parents, Orville and Blanche Clark. Wednesday’s services with full military honors will begin at 2 p.m. at Tracy Cemetery.
