Costa Jan. 24, 1927 — Nov. 17, 2005 A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday morning for retired Tracy dairyman Louis A. Costa, 78, who died Thursday at Sutter Tracy Community Hospital. A native of Brentwood, he grew up in Byron and then in the Carbona area south of Tracy, where his father, Luiz Costa, started a dairy. Mr. Costa attended Jefferson School and Tracy High School for three years before leaving school to work on the family dairy. He returned to high school in 1965 and received his diploma as a member of the first graduating class of the Tracy Adult School. In 1945, the dairy, known as Luiz Costa and Sons, moved to Hansen Road west of Tracy. In 1968, it was renamed Costa Bros. Dairy, operated by Mr. Costa and his two younger brothers, B.R. Costa and Albert Costa. Mr. Costa was an active parishioner of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church. He was a charter member of the St. Bernard’s Dads Club and served as president and treasurer. He was treasurer and director of the IPFES Portuguese society in Tracy for many years and was a Fourth Degree member of Tracy Council No. 4404, Knights of Columbus. Mr. Costa was an adult leader of the Lammersville 4-H Club and a member of Our Lady of Miracles in Gustine. Costa Bros. Dairy sponsored the Costa Creamers, one of the first female softball teams in Tracy city league play in the 1970s. After retiring in 1986, Mr. Costa and his wife, Elayne, enjoyed traveling to Palm Springs each winter with fellow RV enthusiasts. They also traveled throughout the U.S. He was a member of several recreational-vehicle traveling clubs and committee member of the Tracy Friendship RV Club. Mr. Costa had a passion for politics, took a great interest in government and enjoyed watching daytime soap operas. He also enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, especially watching them take part in athletics. He was known for his quick wit and sense of humor. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Elayne Costa of Tracy; four daughters, Carol Costa Minner and her husband, Larry, of Tracy, Doreen Costa Slayter and her husband, Jim, of Tracy, Gerianne Costa McGee and her husband, Ron, of Tracy, and Lynn Costa of Paradise, Butte County; and two sons, Louis A. Costa Jr. and his wife, Jayne, of Stockton, and Steven Costa of Salida. Also surviving are grandchildren, Christen Davis and her husband, Shane, of Tracy, Carly Minner of Honolulu, Hawaii, Robert Minner of Tracy, Lani and Kody McGee of Tracy, Louis Costa III of Stockton, Andrew Costa of San Luis Obispo, and Karyssa and Evan-Michael Costa of Salida; and two great-grandsons, Kieran and Mason Davis. Other survivors include a brother, B.R. Costa and his wife, Carleen, of Tracy; sisters, Mary Costa of Gilroy, Christina Souza of Elk Grove and Lucy Costa of Tracy; a sister-in-law, Della Costa of Tracy; and numerous nieces and nephews. Wednesday’s Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, 163 W. Eaton Ave. Interment will be in Tracy Cemetery. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Fry Memorial Chapel, 550 S. Central Ave. Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary. Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Costa’s name to the St. Bernard’s Building Fund, 163 W. Eaton Ave., Tracy 95376. Published on Saturday, November 19, 2005, in the Tracy Press.
