He was born on September 28, 1918 in Wichita, Kansas, the son of Herbert W. and Avis B. Childers. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1940 to 1945 as a Chief Radioman. In the early years of the war he served as radio operator on merchant ships making the perilous North Atlantic trip between Reykjavik, Iceland and Murmansk, Russia. Later, he served in Casablanca. In 1946 Clarence married Margaret Keane of Banagher, Ireland. They moved to California so that Clarence could work for RCA Global Communications at their transmitting station in Bolinas, Marion County. For virtually his entire life Clarence was involved with amateur radio (W6YKQ) and could often be found tinkering with his gear and working other Hams around the world. In 1974 they moved to Lodi, CA so that Clarence could work in RCA's new satellite relay station. During his 34 year career with RCA, Clarence was commended for his participation in several NASA space missions such as the Apollo-Soyuz Mission in 1975 which was the first joint U.S. & Russian space venture. Clarence also enjoyed gardening and square dancing. In addition to his wife, Clarence is survived by his children, John E. Childers of Petaluma, CA, Richard B. Childers (Jeanne) of San Rafael, CA, Robert K. Childers of Fairbanks, AK, Sharon A. Sluggett (Ron) of Bowen Island, D.C. Canada and grandchildren, Christine Ballari (Dan) of Chico, CA, Daniel Childers of Fairfax, CA, Galen Childers of Anchorage, AK, Allison Childers of Fairbank, AK, Bryan Sluggett, Sean Sluggett, Aaron Sluggett all of Bowen Island, B.C., Canada and step grandson, Michael Morris of Phoenix, AZ. He is preceded in death by a brother, Everett Childers. Friends are welcome to attend a Memorial service on Monday, August 15, 2005 in the Gierhart-Wells & Donahue Funeral Home Chapel, 123 No. School St. Lodi, CA at 11:00 a.m. Inurnment will be private.
