Joseph S. ‘Joe’ Dyer

May 11, 1920 — Jan. 6, 2006

A vigil service will be Friday for U.S. Navy veteran Joseph S. ‘Joe’ Dyer, 85, 
who died Jan. 6, 2006 in Oakland.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mr. Dyer lived in Tracy two years at Summerville at 
Heritage Place. A devoted family man, Mr. Dyer was a parishioner of St. John’s 
Catholic Church for more than 50 years. He was a founding member and helped in 
the building of the church. 

He was very active throughout his life, even while working for Emco 
Distribution as an account sales executive for more than 35 years. He was a 
member of Holy Name Society, St. Vincent de Paul Society, SIRS, the Moose Club 
in Castro Valley and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also a volunteer at St. 
Vincent’s Dining Room and the Kaiser Clinic in Hayward. After retirement, Joe 
ran his own independent toy business. His generosity and work ethic will truly 
be missed.

Mr. Dyer is survived by his children, Jim Dyer, and his wife, Becky, of 
Danville, John Dyer, and his wife, Vickie, of Tracy and Mary Danese, and her 
husband, Ron, of Alamo; grandchildren, Meghan, Christine, Stephanie, Jennifer, 
Syndie, Catie, Carol and Mallie; and great-grandchildren, Dustin and Daxtin.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Marie, in August 2003.

Friday’s vigil service will begin at 7 p.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church, 264 
E. Lewelling Blvd., in San Lorenzo. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 
celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. Visitation will be observed 
from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, at the church. Entombment will be in Holy Sepulchre 
Cemetery, 26230 Mission Blvd., in Hayward.

Contributions in Mr. Dyer’s name may be sent Society of St. Vincent de Paul, 
9235 San Leandro St., Oakland 94603-1295.
