Vernie was the third child born to John and Martha Durkin on January 1, 1926 in their farm house in Ardoch, North Dakota. She moved to Stockton, California in the late 1940's. Vernie was married on April 3, 1949 in Stockton to Casper Jerome Drege, better known as "Cap" and they soon made their home in Lodi. Casper was Captain of the Lodi Fire Department for about 30 years and preceded her in death in 1981. She graduated from Beauty College, then was the owner-operator for the Central Avenue Beauty Salon for 30 years and retired in the early 1990's. Vernie was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Lodi, Loel Center, Elks Lodge in Lodi, Moose Lodge in Lodi, New Comers Club, A.A.R.P. and Forest Lake Golf Club. She had many friends and enjoyed playing cards, golfing and country line dancing as well as crocheting, embroidery and reading. She loved to travel around the world with her family and friends. She is survived by her sons, Curt Drege and his wife Cecilie of Arlington, WA and Dale Drege and his wife Ramona of Lodi, CA; her daughter, DeEtt Coyle and her husband Ed of Wasilla, AK; 5 granddaughters, Darlene Ervin, Carol, Teri, Devenne and Hailee Drege; 2 great-grandsons, Dale and Luke Ervin; also 4 sisters and 2 brothers survive. In addition to her husband, she was preceded by a brother and a sister. She will be greatly missed by all. A graveside service will be held on Sunday, April 3, at 1:30 p.m. in the Garden of Gospels at Cherokee Memorial Park in Lodi, with Pastor Paul Zimmermann of St. Peter Lutheran Church Officiating. Visitation will be held on Saturday 1:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home, 831 Industrial Way near Beckman Road in Lodi. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Hospice of San Joaquin, 3888 Pacific Ave., Stockton, CA 95204 or to Alheimer's Aid Society, 105 S. Washington St., Lodi, CA 95240.
