He was born July 9, 1925, in Stockton. Mr. Fairchilds moved to Lodi with his family in 1933, where he attended local schools and then graduated from Lodi High School in 1943. He entered the U.S. Marine Corps in 1944, and after completing boot camp, was assigned to the Corps radar technology school in Philadelphia. He worked in radar until he was honorably discharged in 1946. He attended the University of California at Berkeley, where he became interested in sailing. He then attended the University of Arizona in Tucson. While in high school and college, he was a member of the swim team and swam in the Masters swim program. He was employed as RCA's western regional training officer until his retirement in 1987. He enjoyed swimming and was recognized as an all American Master's swimmer. He also enjoyed music, sailing, bridge and spending time with friends. He was an avid supporter of the San Francisco Symphony and other musical organizations throughout the Bay Area. He is survived by his daughter, Sarah Fairchilds; and brother, Robert. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Dorothy and Barbara. A memorial gathering will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Sausalito Yacht Club.
