Mas was born January 4, 1915, the fifth of ten children to Kaneichi and Ume Funamura, immigrants from the Hiroshima area of Japan. The family settled in various places in the Lodi and Acampo area, always involved in farming. Mas graduated from Lodi High School in 1934. Seeing an opportunity for a break from farming, Mas volunteered for the Army in 1940. Although his family and wife Nettie, were interned in a wartime relocation camp in Arkansas, Mas spent much of World War II serving in Europe as a medic. Mas returned to Lodi in 1945, where he became a journeyman carpenter, building homes and hospitals around Northern California. After the completion of Lodi Memorial Hospital in 1952, Mas stayed on as the hospital's Chief Engineer until his retirement in 1983. He said he never missed farming. He was active in the Lodi Buddhist Church and the Boy Scouts for many years. Mas was a dedicated flea market hound, tinkerer, and handyman, spending many hours of retirement building gadgets and doodads. Friends and neighbors were well-aware of his ability to turn a one-minute greeting into an hour-long visit. Mas is survived by his wife of 61 years, Nettie. Mas is the father of son Gary Funamura and grandfather of Matthew Funamura, of Cameron Park. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Anne Funamura, his sisters, Mary Iyemura of Haward, Grace Nagata of Stockton, Dorothy Morita of Lodi, and his brother James of Chicago. Mas's brothers George, Sam, Norman, and Roch Funamura and sister Minnie Masaoka have all passed before him. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Mas suffered from Alzheimers disease and diabetes. His family requests that donations in lieu of flowers may be made in his name to the Alzheimers Aid Society of Northern California, 105 South Washington street, Lodi, CA 95240, or the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 1132, Fairfax, VA 22038-1132 (www.diabetes.org for online donations).
