Alex Gilliland

May 14, 1932 — Nov. 13, 2005

A memorial service will be today for outdoorsman Alex Gilliland, 73, who died 
Nov. 13 at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Stockton.

Born in Texas, Mr. Gilliland married Ida Hay in 1950 in Ripon and moved to 
Tracy in 1959. In Tracy, he helped his dad in the produce business and worked 
at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory 13 years. Later, he was a truck 
driver for Brown Trucking and S&H Trucking until his strokes. After his 
divorce in 1996, he moved to Red Bluff and lived next to his sister and her 
family. He moved to Holt in July. 

He loved being on the water and enjoyed boating and fishing. He lived fast and 
hard during his earlier years, but he did ask the Lord for forgiveness before 
he died.

Mr. Gilliland is survived by his children, Kathy Celestine of Tracy, Carol 
Snodderly of Holt, Frank Gilliland of Stockton and Arlene DeHaro of Tracy; 
siblings, Emma Jean Hunt of Red Bluff, Glen Gilliland of Sebastopol, Carolyn 
Ann Jones of Sun Valley, Nev., and Randy Gilliland of Sebastopol; stepmother, 
Betty Gilliland of Sebastopol; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by daughter Dolly Ball; father, James Gilliland, and 
siblings Woody Gilliland, Tootie Becker and Linda Alves.

Today’s memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. in New Heart Community Church of 
the Nazarene, 1647 Bessie Ave.
