Gillespie, 67, of Lodi, passed March 27, 2005. He was born November 4, 1937, in Lodi, where he was raised and attended local schools. Mr. Gillespie graduated from Lodi Union High School in 1955, where he received the Conklin Award his senior year. He attended the University of California Berkeley, where he joined the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and played football at CAL the last year the legendary Lynn (Pappy) Waldorf coached. He was a member of the Big C Society and Papy's Boys. He was inducted into the Lodi Sports Hall of Fame in 1984 and also received a Special Honors Award the following year for being part of the 1955 Lodi Legion Baseball Team. He was a member of BOBS and coached little league for many years. After college, he served in the California National Guard, Lodi Battery. He was a fourth generation grape grower and was a former president of the Lodi District Grape Growers. He was also a former member of the Lodi Rotary Club. He served on the Tokay Marketing Agreement Board, and was a member of the Lodi Lodge No. 256 and the Lucky Anglers. He also served as a director of the North San Joaquin Water District Board. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Julia Gillespie; sister, Mary Ann Boyd of Glenbrook, NV; his children, Curt Gillespie and wife, Nikki of Lodi, Rich Gillespie and wife Liz of Elk Grove and daughter, Sarah Gillespie Cima and husband, Bob of Rochester, MN; and eight grandchildren. There will be a private family service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hutchins Street Square Foundation, Lodi Memorial Hospital Foundation, San Joaquin County Historical Society and Museum; St. John's Episcopal Church, or a charity of the donor's choice.
