Mary S. Bowman April 8, 1914 — May 15, 2004 A celebration of life will be Friday for San Joaquin River Club member Mary S. Bowman, 90, who died May 15 at Tracy Convalescent Hospital. Born in Columbia, Miss., Mrs. Bowman was raised in Illinois. A registered nurse, she specialized in psychiatric nursing and worked at several hospitals in Chicago before moving during World War II to California, where she sewed fabric on aircraft at Alameda Naval Air Station. After the war, she returned to work in San Leandro at Fairmont Hospital as a ward, surgical and emergency room nurse. She was in charge of training nursing students. When the hospital remodeled and expanded in the 1950s, she set up, organized and ran the new central supply room. She retired from Fairmont in 1968, then returned to work at Oakland Hospital as an obstetric nurse until 1972, when her husband retired and the couple moved to the San Joaquin River Club. She was a member of the Lakeside Chapel at the club and a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Mrs. Bowman is survived by her daughter, Vada Snodgrass, and her husband, Lester; four grandchildren, Linda Becker, and her husband, Ronald, Carol Marks, and her husband, Jonathan, Marla Ehrhart, and her husband, Fred, and David Snodgrass; five great-grandchildren, Jennifer and Laura Marks, Sarah and Brian Ehrhart, and Seth Becker; her sister, Helen Pombert, and her husband, Earl; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Lampley, and her husband, John, and Hazel Bowman; two nephews, Harold Pombert, and his wife, Cheryl, and Troy Pombert, and his wife, Jean; four nieces, Carolyn Donow, and her husband, Herbert, Diane Ayers, and her husband, Charles, Janet Bowman and Karen Lampley; three great-nephews, Mark, Harold and Phillip Pombert, and their families; and a great-niece, Christine Pombert. She was preceded in death in 1989 by her husband, Troy E. Bowman; and a brother, Henry Snell. Friday’s service will begin at 2 p.m. at the San Joaquin River Club’s Lakeside Chapel, 30000 S.
