Larry Levonn Hughes Jr. Sept. 9, 1966 — May 17, 2004 Services were Friday for Tracy resident Larry Levonn Hughes Jr., 37, who died Monday in a fishing accident in Manteca. Mr. Hughes was fishing with his two sons, ages 8 and 3, when he fell overboard and drowned in Whiskey Slough. Born in Mobile, Ala., Mr. Hughes moved to Tracy nine years ago. Mr. Hughes served in the U.S. Marine Corps four years and was honorably discharged in 1993. He worked as a group leader for Fuel Total Systems California Inc., a Toyota subsidiary, in Lathrop. Mr. Hughes graduated from Carlmont High School in Belmont in 1985. He enjoyed camping and fishing, and even though he usually didn’t catch anything, he always good-naturedly endured his family’s joking, they recalled. Ironically, on the day of the fatal trip, his eldest son proudly caught a fish. Mr. Hughes was very active in his church, Good News Missionary Baptist Church in Tracy, where he served for two years as president of the Usher Board. A devoted family man, he called his wife and children his greatest pride in life. His dream was to see his children go to college. He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Sonya Hughes, of Tracy; two sons, Montel Julius and Malon Andre Hughes, both of Tracy; a daughter, Jasmine L. Hughes of Fairfield; his father, Larry Hughes Sr., and his wife, Joann, of North Carolina; his mother, Elvira Lang, and her husband, Jimmy, of Alabama; two brothers, Shawn Hughes of North Carolina and Joseph Edwards of Alabama; three sisters, P.T. Faye Wright of South Carolina, Cynthia Scott of Tracy and Melvina Holloway of Ala.; and numerous uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends, who will all miss him greatly. A celebration of life was held Friday at Good News Missionary Baptist Church. Evins Funeral Home, 1219 Seventh St., in Modesto, handled arrangements. Memorial contributions in Mr. Hughes’ name may be made to a trust fund that has been set up for his children at Union Bank of California, 1950 W. 11th St., Tracy 95376.
