The oldest of three children, she was born in Sabetha, Kansas, on November 12, 1915. Her grandfther came across the Great Plains prairie by covered wagon with her grandmother and five children, the yougest being her father. She attended school two miles from her parent's farm where all eight grades were taught in one room. Lucille graduated from high school at the age of sixteen as the valedictorian and the youngest in her class. She continued her education at Kansas State College, where she met her future husband, George James Stipe. In 1953, she completed her college degree at the Univesity of Pacific in Stockton. Lucille was a dedicated school teacher in the Lodi Unified School District for 24 years. She taught 4th and later 5th grade at Leroy Nichols and Needham schools, and retired from teaching in 1976. In their retirement years, she and George enjoyed traveling to Europe, Canada, Mexico, Asia, and throughout the United States. Her hobbies included collecting antiques, cooking, reading, playing the piano and baking pies with her granddaughters. She was a charter member helping organize the Lodi branch of the American Association of University Woman (AAUW) and the Wednesday Club. She was also an active member of PEO, Delta Kappa Gamma (a teacher's society), and a 52-year member of the First United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, George of 64 years. A loving wife, mother and grandmother, she will be missed y her daughter, Loretta Anderson and her husband, Donald of Incline Village, Nevada; her son Robert (Bob) and his wife, Diana of Lodi and their three children, Amanda, Jessica and William. Memorial services will be Saturday, August 14, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 200 West Oak Street.
