Ruth Johnson


Ruth Utterback Johnson, 101, of Lodi, died Aug. 30 in Lodi. She was born July 
27, 1903, in Winthrop, Iowa.

Mrs. Johnson moved to California as an infant with her family, where she was 
raised in Christian Colony in Acampo. She graduated from Lodi High School in 
1922, and later graduated from San Jose State with a bachelor of science degree 
in education.

She married Eric Johnson in 1926, and they settled in Stockton, where she lived 
until settling in Lodi in 1990.

She worked as an elementary school teacher for 30 years at Rustic School in 
Manteca. She was a member of the Unity Church in Stockton. She was also a 
member of the Order of Eastern Star, the Retired Teachers Association, and the 
Philematheon Club of Stockton. She enjoyed refinishing wood, painting, 
decorating, reading and traveling.

She is survived by her sons, Eric Johnson and Galen Johnson; three 
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eric Wilfred Johnson; son, H. Martel 
Johnson; daughter, Lois C. Johnson; brother, Vesper Utterback; sisters, Rachel 
Utterback Davidson, Esther Utterback and Elizabeth Utterback.

Committal was private and there was no visitation.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of San 
Joaquin, 3888 Pacific Ave., Stockton, CA 95204-1953.
