Sutphin, 79, of Vancouver, Wash., and formerly of Lodi, died Oct. 7 in Vancouver following a lengthy illness. He was born June 19, 1925, in Los Angeles. Mr. Sutphin graduated from South Pasadena- San Marino High School in 1943. He served in the Navy during World War II and was stationed in the Pacific Theater. He was honored with the Victory Medal World War II, and two stars for Asiatic Pacific service. After the war, he worked as an insurance adjuster at various locations throughout California and Hawaii. John Sutphin In 1950, he married Jacque Freeman. He and his wife moved to Lodi in 1969, where they enjoyed a career in quarter horse breeding and cherry and grape farming. In the late 1980s, he went back to work as an insurance adjuster. In 2003, they relocated to Vancouver, Wash., to be near their son. He was an avid and skilled sailor, and in the 1960s he regularly served as a crew member on sailboats competing in the TransPac races between California and Hawaii. He also enjoyed leisure sailing on his boat, The Stinger. He is survived by his wife, Jacque Sutphin, of Vancouver, Wash.; son, Michael Buskuhl, of Vancouver, Wash.; daughters, Linnea Laszer, of Stockton, and Brooks Schollinger, of Galt; and eight grandchildren.
