Rev. Leon C. England 
October 26, 1918 - October 18, 2004



  Rev. Leon C. England, 85 of Stockton, passed away on Monday, October 18, 
2004, in a local hospital. Born on October 26, 1918, in Greenville, TX, he 
earned his B.A. degree from Texas Christian University in Philosophy. He 
received a full scholarship to Yale Divinity School, but was unable to attend 
due to the death of his father and need to care for his mother. He attended 
Brite College of the Bible (TCU). He then earned his B.D. from Andover Newton 
Theological School in Newton, MA. Leon received clinical training at 
Massachusetts General Hospital, and graduate thesis on ministering to the 
dying. He Pastored churches in Lynn and Swampscott, MA, Plainview, TX, 
University Christian Church in Iowa City, IA, Freeport Blvd. Christian Church 
in Sacramento and First Christian Church in Stockton, CA. In 1962, he pursued a 
lifelong dream of becoming an institutional chaplain. After a year of 
additional clinical training, he began work at Deuel Vocational Institution in 
Tracy, working first as an institutional counselor in the PICO program, then 
serving as Protestant Chaplain until his retirement in 1984. Being an 
institutional chaplain, he served all religions, a life long ecumenist. Leon 
was a former member of the Rotary, Kiwanis and in 1990 served as Big Sir in the 
Stockton Chapter of SIRS #46. He will be remembered by his humor, compassion 
and inspiration to others.
Leon was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy M. England in 2002. 
He is survived by his sons, Alan Carl (Dianne) England of Stockton and Brett 
Paul (Lara) England of Lodi; and father of the late Kathleen Gail England; 
grandfather of Patrick England, Jordan Heather England and Dylan England.
Friends are invited to attend services on Friday, October 22, 2004, at 11:00 
a.m. in the Central United Methodist Church, 3700 Pacific Ave., Stockton. Max 
Carroll in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions to the Friends of the 
Stockton Public Library, 1724 W. Hammer Lane, Stockton 95210 are preferred.
