Born in Berkeley, Mrs. Gates grew up in Tracy, where her father, Herbert Shroeder, was a Southern Pacific Railroad engineer. She attended Central, West Park and Tracy High schools and graduated from Tracy High in 1938. She later married her high school sweetheart, Jack Gates. After graduating from San Jose State University, her first teaching job was at Naglee School on Tracy Boulevard, then a one-room school with one student in every grade, and one teacher. Mrs. Gates later moved to San Leandro, where she taught 28 years before retiring in 1981. She was a member of PEO, Questers, the Alta Mira Club, the San Leandro Garden Club and the First Presbyterian Church of San Leandro, where she served as an elder and deacon. She was also an avid bridge player. Mrs. Gates’ favorite “club” consisted of a group of childhood friends from Tracy, who fondly referred to themselves as the “Dinosaurs.” Mrs. Gates is survived by a son, Brian McGihon, and his wife, Cindy, of Redding; a daughter, Mary Anne Abercrombie, and her husband, John, of San Leandro; and four grandchildren, Kelly Abercrombie of Truckee, Shannon Abercrombie of Modesto, and Annya and Leonard McGihon, both of Redding. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Leonard McGihon and Dr. John Gates. The memorial service was held at First Presbyterian Church in San Leandro. Santos-Robinson Mortuary, 160 Estudillo Ave., in San Leandro, handled arrangements. Memorial contributions in Mrs. Gates’ name may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 180 Estudillo Ave., San Leandro 94577; or to the Arthritis Foundation, 203 Willow St., San Francisco 94109.
