Withers Sept. 20, 1927 - Oct. 23, 2004 Gertrude A. Withers, 77, was born on September 20, 1927, in a Northern California logging camp. She died Saturday, October 23, 2004, in a local hospital. She moved to Lodi from Stockton 40 years ago. Her mother's family arrived in California by wagon train in the mid-1800's. They were ranchers in Northern California. One time in filling out a form where it requested occupation, Gert wrote in, "Professional Volunteer". She was an early American Red Cross First Aid Instructor in the Stockton area and set-up First Aid Stations at public events; one of the three original founders of the Stockton Women Police Corp; a lifetime member of Girl Scouts and a leader and trainer in the Lodi area and known to many by her camp name of "Peaches". She was active in the first Vinewood Grammar Schools Parents Club and single handedly setup the school's first library including the card files and shelving and until the District filled the position scheduled all of those volunteers who held the library open. She was very active in the Lodi Community Art Center and served as membership chair for five years. There were many other civic activities where she gave of herself and time. She designed a number of Girl Scout patches, which were chosen for usage and had won blue ribbons for other artwork in judged competition for her mixed media. She, assisted by her husband, was the person who restored the large model of the Lodi Arch. During the early sixties as a member of a Lions Club female affiliate support group (women were not allowed Lions Club memberships) she coined the name "Felions" and designed the Lioness head used as a logo. Always ready to help the other person and offer praise she disliked the limelight and while giving credit where credit was due was reluctant to accept credit for herself. Survived by her husband of 49 years, Jon, and daughters, Judy and husband Laurance Bertalino of Lodi, Jennifer Withers Cantrel of Colorado, also honorary adopted daughter and sons, Lynn and Max Blobner of Lemore, CA and Dr. Daniel Mclvor of Lethbridge, Canada. There will be no viewing or other activity as per her wishes.
