Born to Gilbert Hastings and Marie Cathey September 20, 1917, in French Camp, her life began on the family farm in Waterford. Following graduation from Oakdale High School in 1936, she attended Wheaton College in Illinois and later received a Master's Degree in Special Education from the University of San Francisco. Dorothy taught school at Oakdale Jr. High School from 1946 to 1950, and later at Stockton Jr. High and Lafayette School in Stockton. She eventually built and operated her own school at her own home, also in Stockton. Her career as a teacher for over 35 years focused on the special needs of disadvantaged children. Her accomplishments in housing and schooling up to as many as 12 children are well recognized. Well educated and multilingual, Dorothy's passion for adventure led her to travel extensively, sailing about the world aboard her own boat. While sailing from France to San Francisco, she met Jose Martin, a sailor in the Canary Islands later to become her second husband in 1961. Her first marriage was to Ron Gordon of Watsonville. Dorothy and Jose settled in Stockton, CA. Here they built and operated a home for foster children whom they home schooled for 18 years before retirement. Dorothy is a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Stockton. She is pre-deceased by her brother, Fred Hastings. She is survived by her husband Jose; son, Sheldon; nephews, Steven Hastings of Healdsburg, Gary Cathey of Sacramento, Jessie Smith of Stockton; grandnephew, Ryan Hastings of Healdsburg; cousins, Allen Hastings of Palo Alto, Allen Hastings of Los Altos Hills, Mark Hastings of Palo Alto, Joseph Rogers of San Francisco, Winifred and Caroline Rogers of Santa Rosa, Gloria Knight of Foster City, Clara Van Dyne of Shasta Lake, and sisters-in-law, Nievita Martin of Stockton and Beverly Schoenwetter of Oakdale and foster children, Ethyl, Jessica, Jeff and grandchildren Peter and Dorothy Fechner. Graveside Services will be held at Acacia Memorial Park, 801 Scenic Drive in Modesto, on Thursday, November 4, 2004, at 11:30 a.m. Memorial Services will be held at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 2220 W. Alpine Ave. in Stockton, on Saturday November 6, at 11:00 a.m. Donations can be made to St. Paul's Church, Stockton.
