Clifton, passed away on November 4, 2004, in Summerfield, Florida. James spent his early years in Colorado City, Texas and in the Escalon area of San Joaquin Valley with his family. He was a resident of Stockton for over 50 years, and has been living in Florida for the last three years. He was a Veteran of WWII, having served as an Air Navigator in the U.S. Navy. After serving 30 years of distinguished public service he was promoted through the ranks and retired as Chief of the Stockton Fire Department. His affiliations included Downtown Stockton Rotary Club, International Association of Fire Chiefs, California Association of Fire Chiefs, Ed Stewart Post, American Legion, I.O.O.F., Moose Lodge, Board of Directors of the International Red Cross and The Boy Scouts of America, a member of Elkhorn Country Club, and the Spruce Creek Country Club in Florida. He was a keen hunter, fisherman and golfer who enjoyed many years in the Sierras at the family cabin near Long Barn, Tuolumne County. He was loved and enjoyed by all who knew him and he will be dearly missed by family and friends. He is survived by his loving children, James R. Clifton of Stockton, Elizabeth Clifton-Mason, Kingston-upon-Thames, UK, and Spencer M. Clifton of Eureka, CA; his cherished daughters-in-law, Rejeana and Dianna Clifton; his son-in-law, Barry Mason; and his adored mother-in-law, Grace Montgomery of Stockton; son, Martin C. Clifton and Velma Lee Ennis. He was the brother of Gerald Clifton of Manteca, CA, Mildred Ebberts of Aromas, CA, Neil Rimmer of Sacramento, CA, and Judy Misasi of Monterey, CA. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Raymond C. Clifton, European Theater, WWII, Roy M. Clifton, Korean Conflict, and Betty Gross of Stockton. He was the loving grandfather of James W. Clifton, MD., Amber Cardenas, Jess Clifton, Emily Clifton, Margaret Clifton-Mason, Tyler Clifton-Mason, two great-grandchildren and was a Very Special Uncle to many loved nieces and nephews. Friends and family are invited to join us at a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated at St. Luke's Catholic Church, 3847 N. Sutter St., Stockton, CA on Friday, November 12, 2004, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be at DeYoung Memorial Chapel, 601 N. California Street, Stockton, CA on Thursday, November 11 from 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. Committal will be at Burwood Cemetery, 28320 E. River Road, Escalon, CA.
