Born and raised in Auburn, California, she met her future husband, third-generation Stocktonian, the late Robert O. Scott at Sacramento Community College. The two were married secretly while Robert was completing his teaching degree at Chico State, an arrangement noted by their friend and classmate, Herb Caen, in his college newspaper column, a template for his long running and widely renowned column in the San Francisco Chronicle. After the couple moved to Stockton in 1940, Dorothy opened a dress shop on Pacific Ave. When Robert became principal at El Dorado School, she dedicated herself to raising their children and assumed leadership positions with the PTA and Cub Scouts, as well as volunteering at St. Joseph's Hospital. The couple began investing in and developing commercial property on Stockton's Pacific Avenue Miracle Mile in the 1960s. The properties flourished, and after Robert's death in 1987, she managed the properties and became president of the Pacific Ave. Improvement District Assn. During her presidency the committee planned and made a commitment to the area's recently completed improvements. Both Robert and Dorothy were active and devoted members of Stockton's First Baptist Church. They also maintained a residence in Santa Cruz. The couple's first daughter, Jacqueline Scott, was killed in a boating accident in 1952 at the age of 14. Dorothy is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Lois and Hugh Moore III, of Santa Cruz; son and daughter-in-law, Robert O. and Sharon Scott of Warwick, NY; grandchildren, Tiffany Jean Moore of San Jose, Skip and Jodee Moore of Stockton, Jonathan and Linnea Scott of Warwick, NY; great-grandsons, Hugh IV and Hugh G. Moore V, of Stockton. Services will be Thursday, November 18, 1:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church. Donations preferred to First Baptist Church Memorial Fund.
