Dr. Fortier was born in Kewanee, Illinois on January 21, 1935, to Clarence A. and Elizabeth Fortier. He graduated from Kewanee schools, attended the University of Notre Dame and received his medical degree from the University of California Irvine. After a three year residency in ophthalmology at Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital, Dr. Fortier and his family traveled North in search of a suitable home. During a layover in Lodi, Dr. Fortier discovered there was a need for another ophthalmologist in Lodi. He established his practice there and retired in June 2003 after 36 1/2 years of practicing medicine. Prior to attaining his medical degree, Dr. Fortier spent seven years in the Army National Guard. Once in Lodi he became a member of Lodi Elks and Oddfellow Lodges, San Joaquin County Medical Society and St. Anne's Catholic Church. Dr. Fortier was an avid football fan and his interest in politics was surpassed only by his interest in his patients. His insatiable desire to stay up on current events drove him to read, at least, three newspapers a day. His home was a perennial meeting place for friends and family, and he was always the life of the party. Dr. Fortier is survived by his wife, Janet of 45 years; 3 sons, Bill and his wife Sherry Fortier of Westchester, Craig and his wife Connie Fortier of Atascadero, and Mary and his wife Kay of Hayden Lake, Idaho; 1 daughter, Janelle Marie and her husband Ed Poor of San Carlos; 4 grandchildren, Alyssa Lyn, Carley Kay, Bryan William and Jenna Claire Fortier. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Ed and his sister Mary Frances. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anne's Catholic Church followed by committal at Lodi Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Gierhart-Wells & Donahue Funeral Home. A reception to follow at Wine and Roses. Contributions may be made to Lodi Memorial Hospital Foundation, 999 S. Fairmont Ave. Ste. 105, Lodi, CA 95240.
