Joyce Dunkerley Jacoby 
Aug. 19, 1913 - Nov. 28, 2004



Joyce Dunkerley Jacoby, 91, of Stockton died peacefully on Sunday, November 28, 
2004, in a local care facility. Joyce attended Pasadena City College and 
graduated from Stanford University in 1936, majoring in English. She was hired 
in 1937 as the first Y secretary on the campus of the College (now University) 
of the Pacific. In 1938 she married Harold "Jake" Jacoby, professor of 
Sociology (later Dean of COP). They were married 62 years until his death 
in 2000. They resided in Stockton except for brief periods elsewhere in the 
United States and Japan. Joyce was a "founding mother" of Jack and Jill Parent 
Cooperative Nursery in the 1940's and remained active in that and other 
organizations, including American Association of University Women, the League 
of Women Voters, Stockton Metro Ministry and mission boards of the United 
Methodist Church. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church. Joyce 
was particularly involved with Stockton's Metro Ministry, St. Mary's Center and 
the Adult Literacy Project, and helped launch the county's Head Start Programs 
in the 1960s. She was past President of UOP Faculty Dames and the Family 
Service League. Joyce taught English at John Marshall Middle School in the 
1950s and 60's. The Univer-sity of the Pacific honored her with a 90th birthday 
celebration in August, 2003. Joyce was a loving wife and mother, caring friend, 
committed citizen and skilled community activist. Joyce was preceded in death 
by her son, Peter William in 1957 and husband, Harold.
She is survived by sons, Jonathan (Robin) of Belmont, MA, and Stewart (Rita) of 
Lodi; grandchildren, Peter Robert (Jeanne) and Leah Jacoby, Jennifer and Katie 
Hopkins, Christopher Jacoby; and great granddaughter, Olive Serrita Peterson.
Celebration of Life services will be held Saturday, December 18, 2004, at 2:00 
p.m., at Central United Methodist Church, 3700 Pacific Ave., Stockton. Max 
Carroll of Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
