Schaal, 72, of Lodi, died Dec. 13 in a Stockton care facility. She was born Jan. 7, 1931, in Highmore, S.D., where she was raised. Mrs. Schaal graduated from high school in Custer, S.D. She attended the School of Theology and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts cum laude in Yankton, S.D., majoring in languages and theology. She earned her Doctor of Ministry with Jesuit School of Theology ICE Berkeley. She was the programming director at radio station WNAX in Yankton for about a year. In 1953, she organized and led DVBS all over South Dakota and spent the remainder of the summer preaching on the Indian reservation in Dupree, S.D. She was a missionary in Argentina from 1958-71, where she also taught music theory and cooked for 19 people on an old kerosene stove. She was active as a pastor's partner and missionary for 43 years in the U.S. and Argentina until her retirement in 1996. She taught missionaries from Argentina, Brazil, and Europe. She was the choir director for churches in Colorado, California, Montana, Washington and Idaho. She lived in the Lodi area from 1972-80, and then returned in 1996. Her church affiliations included Congregational, United Church of Christ and Zion Reformed Church. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, the Rev. Herbert Schaal, of Lodi; sons, Mark E. Schaal, of Sacramento, Dwight T. Schaal, of Phoenix, and James A. Schaal, of Chicago; daughter, Patricia R. Browning, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sister, Judith A. Bulman, of San Leandro; and five grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Zion Reformed Church, 105 S. Ham Lane, Lodi. There will be no visitation.
