She was born Nov. 5, 1922, in Fowler. Ms. Shahenian was raised in Fresno where she attended local schools. She graduated from 4C's College, and then began her career in the wine industry in 1947. Most of her career was spent with Lodi-based Guild Wineries and Distilleries and its affiliated companies. She became the first woman to be a winery manager in California in 1961 when she was placed in the position of manager for Garret and Co. Winery in Guasti. In 1975, she became the first woman to be elected to the Wine Institute Board of Directors, and was also featured on the cover of Wines and Vines Magazine as "First Lady of Wine." She is survived by her niece, Marilyn Missakian; and nephews, Kalem Barserian, Samuel Shahenian and Russell Shahenian. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Shahenian, Rose Barserian and Alice Paul; and brother, Aram Shahenian. A funeral was held on Thursday.
