Knox was born on December 18, 1922, in Fresno and was raised on a farm by his parents, Rainey H. and Ruby Belle La Rue. During the time he attended Fresno State College, Mr. La Rue, who possessed a resonant speaking and singing voice, launched his broadcasting career as an announcer for KARM radio. He moved in 1944 to New York City, where he worked for a national radio advertising company and sang in the chorus at Carnegie Hall. In addition, he worked for Time magazine, where he met his first wife, the late Mary Sue Simmons Gottcent. Knox returned to California where he opened the west coast office of the George P. Hollingberry Advertising Company. He took the opportunity in 1949 to own and control his own radio station in the central valley and KSTN was born. He expanded his businesses in the 1950's and became co-owner of KTVU -TV Channel 36, started the first mobile telephone services in Stockton and Sacramento and established telephone answering services through out northern California. To expand his radio business, he purchased numerous mountaintops including the North peak of Mt. Diablo. Knox focused on reporting and serving the local community, especially the Spanish speaking community, by primarily devoting KSTN-FM to Spanish programming. Knox served on various advisory boards and commissions. He belonged to the Yosemite Club and The Rotary Club of Stockton. At his death he was the current, longest surviving member of his Rotary club. In addition to his wife, the former Marianna Sanchez, Mr. La Rue is survived by his four children, Ann Matlow of Westport, Connecticut and John K. La Rue, Robert La Rue and Knox La Rue Jr., all of Stockton; four grandchildren, Thaddius, Erin, Matthew and Tess La Rue, all of Stockton; and two sisters, Annette La Rue of Fresno and Barbara Franklin of North Highlands. A Memorial Service will be held at the DeYoung Shoreline Chapel, 7676 Shoreline Drive, Stockton, CA on Wednesday, December 29, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. A Viewing is scheduled for Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Shoreline Chapel. Private committal at Mt. View Cemetery, Fresno. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
