Mrs. Ennis born August 9, 1927, was a native of Petone, New Zealand. She entered the United States by ship as a war bride in 1945, and settled in Escalon with her husband John that same year. She remained in Escalon until her death. Joan worked at the Escalon Library for many years, and read to several generations of local children at the weekly story hour. She also worked to develop a new, larger library. Additionally, Joan submitted articles and photographs for publication in the Stockton Record and several other periodicals. Joan was active in the Methodist church, and served as the District Director of Lay Speakers. She enjoyed singing in the choir, and sang at many weddings and funerals through the years. After her retirement, she volunteered many hours at the Senior Center, primarily for the lunch program and meals on wheels. She and her husband John were given the honorary title of Mr. & Mrs. Escalon in 1990. She is survived by her three children, Ray Ennis of Centreville, VA, Pat Ennis of Sonora, and Marilyn Girard of Santa Cruz and her sister, Helen Howard of New Zealand and sisters-in-law, Molly Carruth and Polly Ennis of Escalon as well as five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband John in 1996. Visitation will be January 3, 2005 at Deegan Funeral Chapel, 1441 San Joaquin Street, Escalon between the hours of 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on January 4, 2005, at Escalon Methodist Church following private interment at Burwood Cemetery.
