Verlia and her husband James Askew were pastors of Baptist churches in Jones and Vinita Oklahoma, and Bakersfield and Vacaville, California. Verlia and James also served as missionaries in the Baptist Home Missionary Field in Pinedale, Wyoming and Santa Ana, California. She made her home in Stockton in 1975 where she worked and retired from Delta College in 1989. Verlia was a member of Quail Lakes Baptist Church and active in Native American events, PAWS, and the Democratic Party. One of the highlights of her life was attending the first inauguration of President Bill Clinton. She is survived by her son, Norman A. Askew, daughter-in-law, Liane, son, James A. Askew, and daughter-in-law, Gayorgiahne, all residents of Stockton. She is also survived by one granddaughter, four step-grandchildren, and four, soon to be five, step-great-grand children. She is also survived by "Zeke," her Rottweiler and companion for ten years. Verlia was known for her honesty, judgement, straightforwardness, hard work, and love of her two sons, in whom she took great pride. With her support and encouragement one received a Masters and the other a Law Degree. She was an exceptional daughter, wife, mother, worker, and friend, "MOM was always there for us and will always be missed." At the request of the family no visitation will be held. Burial arrangements are pending. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made be made in her name to The Three Rivers Indian Lodge, 13505 Union Road, Manteca, CA 96632, or PAWS, P.O.
