He was born July 28, 1920, in Eureka, CA. He was a graduate of UC Berkeley in 1942. He was an officer in the maritime service and a captain of a liberty ship in WWII in the mediterranean. He taught navigation at the maritime academy in Alameda, CA. He was a graduate of Hastings School of Law in 1948. He opened his law office in Stockton in 1949 and he practiced law for 40 years. He was an avid sailor, national challenger division champion in sailing. He was one of the original founding members of the Stockton Sailing Club. Devoted father of 4 sons, William, Peter, Thomas and James Jr. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father Claude Van Dyke, mother Bertha Steele Van Dyke and sister, Claudia Huntington. He is survived by sisters, Lenore Shaw of Stockton, Emmy Cote of San Diego and brother Fred Van Dyke of Stockton. James was the kindest, most generous, honest, humorous person and will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.
