Shaffer, 80, passed away January 3, 2005. She was born and raised in Grand Island, NB to George and Mary Bauer. She has 3 sisters who are still living and 1 who is deceased. She also has 1 brother still living and 1 who is deceased. She left Nebraska in 1943 and moved to California with a girl friend to look for work and start a new phase of her life. She found a job at the Port of Stockton in Stockton, CA where she packaged goods for overseas. She met her future husband, Hershel in 1944 (February) on a blind date at a wrestling match, he was on leave from the Army Air Force. He was stationed in El Paso, TX and that is where they were married on May 17, 1944. In July of 1944 her husband was sent overseas so she moved back home to Nebraska and got a job at the Defense Plant where she put mortar shells together. She stayed there until her husbands return from overseas in February, 1945. They spent time in Kentucky before settling in California. She had their only children (a set of twins - 1 boy, 1 girl) in October, 1945. She was a stay at home mom until her children where school age. When her children started school she went to work for the Stockton School District in the Food Service Division. She worked there for a number of years. After that she became the manager of the Philomathean Club which is a Women's Society Club. She organized luncheons, fashion shows, etc. for the club for 5 or so years. She was very devoted to her family and even took in a foster child in the late 60's. She also helped to raise 2 grandchildren when her daughter passed away in February, 1986 from lupus. She loved to sew and knit and was always making things for her grandbabies. She leaves behind her husband of nearly 61 years and lots of family and friends. She will be missed very much. Services were already held. Donations may go to Salvation Army or Visiting Nurse Assoc.
