Kempf Oct. 9, 1902 - Feb. 9, 2005 Lola O. Kempf, age 102, passed away in February 9, 2005 at a local convalescent hospital. She was born in Lyons, Nebraska on October 9, 1902 to John and Nettie Tranmer. Lola traveled by covered wagon to the West Coast in the 1920's with her family. There she met and married the love of her life, Virgil Atherton. They eventually settled in Stockton where Lola lived for almost 80 years. During her long and active life, Lola was preceded in death by husbands Joe McKie, Virgil Atherton, Jack Nichols and Art Kempf; and two of her children, Betty Buntin and George Atherton. For 50 years, she was sole owner and operator of The Home Curtain Laundry, a custom curtain and tablecloth laundering facility. She retired when she turned 91. During her younger years, Lola had a passion for Ballroom dancing. Until she was 100 years old, she enjoyed tending her vegetable garden and her rabbits, sheep and chickens. A very independent woman, she was able to continue living alone in her own home east of Stockton until she became too frail shortly after her 101st birthday. Survived by her dear son, John B. Atherton and daughter-in-law Edie of Stockton; and her beloved sister, Viva H. Baker of Live Oaks, CA. Also survived by her grandchildren and (spouses) Sam P. Kab II (Marilyn Milan) of San Diego, Joanne Paine (Henry) and Brenda Rockwell of Stockton, John R. Atherton (Julie) of Sonora, and Faye Sappenfield and Karen Touchstone (Robert Wagner) of Lodi. Also survived by eight great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Friends are invited to attend visitations from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 17, 2005 at Frisbie-Warren & Carroll Mortuary, 809 N. California Street in Stockton.
