He was born August 31, 1916 in Chicago, IL to Jacob and Olga Schiffman. In 1923, the family migrated to Stockton, CA where Charles was a pupil at the old Weber School. He graduated from Stockton High School and earned a Bachelor's Degree at College of the Pacific. During WWII he was a member of ground support of the 347th Fighter Squadron known as the "Screaming Red Ass". In 1942-1945, the squadron was stationed in England, North Africa, Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica, and Italy. Postwar, Charles edited and published an unofficial PICTORIAL AND HISTORICAL HISTORY of the Squadron. Following the war, Charles was a History teacher at Stockton High School and Edison High School, and served in Administrative positions at Stockton High School, Amos Alonzo Stagg High School and Tokay High School. His European Student Summer Trips which he organized were conducted continuously for 17 years, beginning in 1956 through 1973. His retirement at age 72 ended 44 years of teaching and administrative duties after which he was able to pursue his hobby of collecting antiques and keeping in touch with many former students. He was a proud member of the Weber Point Coffee Club. He was the loving brother of Milton Schiffman of San Francisco, Henry Schiffman of Pacific Grove, and Leon Schiffman and Charlotte Vassar both of Stockton. He is also survived by his nieces, Jackie Saflex, Diane Giottonini, Joanne Leventini, Cathy Vassar and his nephew Jim Vassar and one great-nephew and several great-nieces. A Memorial Service in Mr. Schiff- man's honor will be held at Morris Chapel, University of the Pacific, Stockton, CA on Sunday, March 6, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow at Grace Covell Hall. All of Charlie's friends and people whose lives he touched are invited to attend. There will be no visitation. Private Committal. Donations in his memory may be made to your favorite charity.
