She was born Sept. 7, 1918, in Detroit, Mich. Mrs. Svalya married John Michael Svalya in 1940, and they settled in Southfield, Mich. In 2001, she relocated to Lockeford to live with her daughter, and in 2002, she moved to Lodi. She was a member of Brightmoor Christian Church in Southfield, Mich., and then was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Lodi. She enjoyed being with people and was active in church, where she taught Sunday school, sang and supported missionaries, and took care of children, elderly and the sick. She and her husband were avid gardeners and often shared their fruits and vegetables from their large garden. She also enjoyed reading her Bible, sewing, camping, traveling and spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by her daughter, Betsy Robinson, of Lockeford; son, Phillip Svalya, of Saratoga; brothers, Ray, Richard and John Peters; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, John Svalya; daughter, Susan Anderson; sister, Elizabeth Drobish; and brothers, Edward Peters and Lawrence Peters. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at William Sullivan & Son Funeral Home, 705 W. Eleven Mile, Royal Oak Mich. Committal will follow at Oakview Cemetery in Royal Oak. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. March 6 at Austin Gardens, 2150 W. Kettleman Lane, Lodi.
