Bernasconi Robert J. Bernasconi, age 66 of Barstow, California, died peacefully in his sleep, at home on Tuesday, February 8, 2005. Bob, as he was known to all who knew him, died from complications of Diabetes, Multiple Sclerosis, Pulmonary Edema and Congestive Heart failure. Bob had suffered for more than ten years with these debilitating illnesses and had been totally bedridden for the past fourteen months. Born to Joseph and Lillian Bermasconi, in New York City, on October 23, 1938, he was an only child. Bob grew up in Lodi, California and joined the Navy immediately after graduating high school in 1956. After getting out of the Navy, he worked full time at a mental hospital putting himself through college for nine years earning his four-year degree. He had a first wife and four kids to support. On May 12, 1969 he entered into Federal Law Enforcement joining Naval Intellegence. He spent 25 years as a Special Agent with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. Bob spent five years in the Philippines, five years in Florida, two years in Okinawa and transferred to Barstow in July of 1982 where he met and married Sheryl within two months. He loved most of the agents he'd worked with and thought of them as family. He retired in Barstow in January of 1994. Bob was preceded in death by his father Joseph Bernasconi of Lodi, his mother- in-law, Florence, JT (Jake) and John T. Holland of Barstow. He is survived by his mother Lillian Bernasconi of Lodi, California; his soulmate, lover, caregiver and best friend, wife of twenty two and a half years Sheryl Bermasconi; sons Scott (Teresa), Todd, Darren (Connie) Bernasconi and daughter Stephanie Turrini. He also is survived by his step-sons Jerry (Rose), Scotty (Hilda) and Garry Purdy and stepdaughter Ellizabeth Purdy. He is survived by grandchildren Robby and Amanda Bernasconi, Dane (TW) Cochran, Clarissa, Jerry Jr., Jordan and Devin Purdy, Eric and Erica Purdy, Angelica Purdy, Alexander, Adrianna and Carla Purdy, Ryan and Tyler Hill and Anna Dirksen. He is survived by his cousin Carl (Eva) Wishek of Lodi; brother-in-law Mike (Jeanie) Holland; sister-in-law Candy (TY) Engelhart and many nieces and nephews, as well as life long friends. Bob had also enjoyed a unique and special friendship, with his wife Sheryl's first husband, Leonard Purdy of Barstow. He had an extra special bond too with is Hospice bather Dorit. She alwayd made him laugh and brightened his day when she came. Thank you Dorit. Bob was a gun enthusiast and collector all his life. Knowing he couldn't and wouldn't be using them anymore, he contacted a gun dealer, whom he and Sheryl became close friends with, and sold his collection these past few years. He was well known at the Barstow Stater Brother's Market, riding around on his scooter, pushing a grocery cart full of groceries.. He missed that these past fourteen months since he couldn't get out of bed anymore. Paula and Kristine always asked about him this past year too. Thanks ladies. Bob acceptd the Lord and is at peace now. Per his wishes, there will be no funeral services. Victor Valley Mortuary is handling aarrangements and Bob will be buried aat Riverside National Cemetery.
