Hunter Nov. 8, 1926 - February 28, 2005 Ray B. Hunter, 78, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 28, 2005. He was born November 8, 1926 in Modesto, CA. He served in the U.S.Navy during World II and was a 1949 graduate of the College of the Pacific which he attended on a football scholarship. After college he moved to Tuolumne County where he owned and operated a farming and ranching business. Later he was a partner in a real estate development and construction firm. During this time he served on many community service boards and was involved in political activities. In 1967 he started state service as a legislative assistant. Later in 1967 he was named deputy director for the State Dept. of Parks & Recreation and in 1969 was promoted to chief deputy director. In 1972 he was appointed director of the Calif. Dept. of Conservation by Gov. Ronald Reagan. He started an equipment rental business in Calaveras and Amador counties in 1975. At the same time he became a director of the Calif. Mining Assn. He lobbied for other businesses as well until his retirement. In 1998 he moved from Sutter Creek to San Joaquin County. He was the beloved husband of 47 years to the late Joan Hunter and is survived by his daughter, Sue and son-in-law, Kees Groene-wegen, daughter, Carol and son- in-law, John Sharpe and son, Wesley Hunter; his brother, Jack and sister-in- law, Lois Hunter. There are four granddaughters, Bonnie Sharpe Ostini, Jennifer Raymond Munck, Katie Raymond and Sarah Hunter and one great-grand-daughter, Jordan Munck. A memorial service will be held Friday, March 4, 2005, 2:00 p.m. at Lincoln Presbyterian Church, 900 Douglas Road, Stockton. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be sent to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of San Joaquin County.
