HARLAN CALLED BY DEATH. Milton H. Harlan, a resident of Stockton over 40 years, died Sunday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Eva Collins, 1521 North Commerce street. For about 30 years he was in the employ of the city school department as custodian of the old Homestead School on Fourth street, and few men shared in the affections of several generations of school children more than he. His parents crossed the plains [in 1846] with California's earliest pioneers and he was born at Coloma in 1848. His father [Jacob Wright Harlan] was later prominent in business in San Francisco. The Stocktonian owned and operated one of the first ferrys on the San Joaquin river in this section and their home was one of the show places of that period. Mr. Harlan married the daughter of a pioneer family who were prominent in Shasta county. The wife, Mrs. Kate Harlan, survives her husband. Other surviviros are two daughters and two sons, Charles Harlan of Berkeley, Archer Harlan of San Francisco, Mrs. Eva B. Collins of Stockton and Mrs. Horace T. Cooke of Los Angeles.
