Mr. Helmle was a native of South Russia. He came to the United States in 1912 and settled in North Dakota where he operated a livery stable. He moved to Lodi in 1919 and married Katherine Hildenbrand in 1922. The couple lived in Pomona for two years and returned to Lodi in 1923. Mr. Helmle was a vineyardist and worked as a plumber and sheet metal man in Lodi for many years. He retired in 1947. He was a founding member of Glad Tidings/Firs Assembly/ Century Assembly. His wife died in 1981. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Ted Helmle; three sisters, Martha Kehn, Mary Miller and Lydia Konschak; and a half- sister, Susanna Suetter. He is survived by two sons, Melvin Helmle, of Lodi and Orville Helmle, of Santa Cruz; five grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren. Services will begin at 1 p.m. Friday in the Lodi Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Vernon Klemin of Oregon officiating. Committal will be in Cherokee Memorial Park Cemetery.
