Born in San Francisco, Mr. Hoeft and his family moved to Sonoma in 1916. During the 1930s, he attended Santa Rosa Junior College and San Jose State. He worked as a longshoreman in San Francisco, a farm and cannery worker in Sonoma and Lake counties and a miner in New Mexico. He was a talented musician who played the banjo, saxophone and clarinet in a band at weekend dances in Fetter Hot Springs. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy as a cook and was stationed in the Pacific theater. After he was discharged in 1946, he married Louise Ann Radtke. Mr. Hoeft began his career as an educator in 1949 at El Verano Elementary School in Sonoma. For 32 years, he worked as an elementary teacher and principal in numerous Bay Area schools. He retired at age 67 from Tracy Unified School District after teaching special-education classes at local elementary schools for 12 years. Charming and outgoing, Mr. Hoeft enjoyed a good joke and a good party. He loved to play card and board games and was an active member of local cribbage clubs. He will be remembered as a beloved dad, grandpa and uncle. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Mr. Hoeft is survived by his children, William Hoeft, and his wife, Maria Simon, of Los Gatos, Susan Weaver of Napa, Teresa Trejo-Mejia, and her husband, Guillermo, of Antioch, Richard Hoeft, and his wife, Donna, of San Jose, James Hoeft of Sparks, Nev., Thomas Hoeft of Sonoma, Alicia Atkinson, and her husband, David, of Davis and Stephen Hoeft, and his wife, Ann, of Pleasant Hill; 16 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by his nephew, John Hoeft, and his wife, Marti, and their two sons, all of Santa Rosa. The memorial Mass will begin at 5 p.m. Nov. 25 at Saint Francis Solano Catholic Church in Sonoma. A gathering of friends and family will immediately follow at Friar Robert’s Hall. Inurnment will be private. Contributions in Mr. Hoeft’s name may be sent to Hanna Boys Center, P.O. Box 100, Sonoma 95476, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
