Johnson Dr. Frank V. Johnson Jr., 83 , of Lodi, passed away in his home on Monday, July 11, 2005, after a brief illness. He was born to Frank Sr., and Ruth Johnson on October 26, 1921 in Payette, ID. Dr. Johnson was raised in Weiser, ID, where he attended local schools. He joined the National Guard in 1938 and served in the US Army during WWII overseas and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1967. Following the service he attended undergrad and graduate studies at UC Berkeley where he became a professor. He taught third year Optometry Clinic at UC Berkeley for 33 years. Dr. Johnson moved to Lodi in October of 1955 where he had his private Optometry practice from 1955-1976. Dr. Peter Hetzner joined him in practice from 1976-1991. He retired from Lodi Optometry group in 1992. Following retirement he was part-owner and managing partner for Lodi Property Management. He was also part-owner of the Lodi Dodgers Class A baseball team. He married Elizabeth (Betty) Deavers in December, 1947. She passed away in 1983. He later married Tina Reiter on October 4, 1986 in Lodi. He was a long-time member of the Zion Reformed Church and a member of the Lodi Lions Club, International Order of Odd Fellows, Lodi Elks Lodge, Woodbridge Country Club and a past member of SIRS. He served on the Lodi Grape Festival Board and the Lodi Chamber of Commerce. He was awarded the William T. Harkins Outstanding Citizen Award in 1980. Dr. Johnson was active in the Hutchins Street Square Foundation, Lodi Memorial Hospital Foundation and was inducted into the Lodi Boys & Girls Club Wall of Fame. He was a member of the American, California and San Joaquin Optometric Associaations. For the past eight years Dr. Johnson was a grandparent reader and known as Grandpa Frank to the children at Emma B. Reese Elementary School in Lodi. He loved to golf, read and be outdoors with nature. He liked watching Giants baseball and loved to spend time with his grandchildren. He developed a love for cats. He enjoyed music and played the trombone. He was the beloved husband for 19 years of Tina Johnson of Lodi; loving father of Eric Johnson and wife Margaret, of Potter Valley, CA, Robert Johnson and wife Colleen of Fresno, Victor Johnson of Lodi and step-father of Dana Jacobs of Eureka, CA; dear grandfather of Anthony and Elizabeth Johnson of Fresno; brother of Richard Johnson of Idaho and Marjorie Flannigan and husband John of Virginia; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved and loved cats, Minkee, Gracie and Spokey Bear. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Friday, July 15, 2005, at the Zion Reformed Church, 105 S. Ham Ln., Lodi, at 11:00am with Pastor Matthew Duerr officiating. Inurnment will be private in Idaho. Following the service, friends are welcome to attend a reception at Hutchins Street Square, Crete Hall, 125 S. Hutchins St. to celebrate Dr. Johnson's life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hutchins Street Square or to the Hospice of San Joaquin, 3888 Pacific Ave., Stockton, CA 95204.
