Ethel Josephine Haverly was born November 8, 1916, near Kidder, South Dakota to Norwegian immigrants Joe and Anna Haverly. She was raised on the family farm there and graduated in 1934 from Kidder High School where she was the class Salutatorian. She married Kenneth Hickok on March 18, 1941. Following the war, the Hickoks resided in Britton, South Dakota, moving to Lodi in June 1957. Ethel was a homemaker whose hobbies included crocheting and other crafts. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her four grandsons. She was a life-long member of the Lutheran church. In January 1992, Ethel was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years. She was also preceded in death by two older brothers, Melvin and Selmer Haverly. She is survived by her daughters, Judy (Richard) McKelvey, and Janie (Robert E.) Siess, as well as her four cherished grandsons, Paul and Andrew McKelvey, and Robert K. and Matthew Siess, as well as two sister, Gladys Doyle and Alma Anderson, both of Britton, South Dakota. Ethel's life will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 19, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 1540 West Lodi Avenue, Lodi, with Pastors Bill Crabtree and Eric Griffith officiating. There will be no visitation. Donations in her memory may be made to the Emanuel Lutheran Church Memorial Fund. Cherokee Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
